Bobby Bowden discussed this morning on "Fox & Friends" the importance of faith during his legendary coaching career.

The 87-year-old former Florida State University coach is the subject of a new documentary, "The Bowden Dynasty," that will premiere in select theaters on Sunday, January 8th.

The two-time national title-winning coach recalled that during his career, he felt that he and his coaches had to fill the role of father figures for players who grew up without fathers in their lives.

The Hall of Fame coach was often seen praying with his players, an action that has become controversial in recent years at public high schools. Bowden noted that Christians have been "persecuted" for 2,500 years and it's still happening around the world.

"If you're gonna be a Christian or you're gonna announce God, you're gonna turn a lot of people off. So what? I don't mind getting turned off for that," said Bowden.

Bowden, who retired in 2009, said that he told the parents of recruits that he'd be brining players to church.

"I'd say, 'when your son comes to Florida State, I'm gonna take him to church. I'm gonna take him to a white church and the next Sunday, I'm gonna take him to a black church. I just wanted them to see that no matter what their race, they were welcome in our churches here in Florida," he recalled, adding that the parents "loved" the message.

Bowden was also asked about 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick's protest of the national anthem, but he said he never had to face that type of situation during his coaching career.

Bowden said he would have pleaded with Kaepernick that the protest would be "unwise" and urge him to find another way to voice his displeasure.

"There's too much history, too much blood has been given for that Star-Spangled Banner," he said.
