Professor is fired for expecting students to learn

This weekend on “The Mike Slater Show,” Mike Slater explored a worrying change in collegiate standards. Adjunct professor Nathanial Bork was fired from the community college of Aurora, Colorado, for refusing to dumb down the standards of his philosophy class.

The official wording for the firing was Bork’s “lack of effectiveness in implementing the philosophy curriculum redesign” as part of their Gateway to Success Initiative, which Mike had hoped meant that the course would help students to be “more successful in the real world.”

Upon further research, Mike discovered that “the goal is to get more kids to pass so they’ll be more likely to stay in school and graduate.” Examples of how this was to be accomplished include only requiring a maximum of eight pages of writing  per semester, plus group assignments “like in kindergarten.” The professor was also asked to guarantee at least 30% of works studied would be by minorities, including women.

Bork would have been required to teach in this manner so that 80 percent of “all student groups, as defined by race and gender” passed his course, which means that if four people in his class belonged to one specific group, all four would have to pass to meet the requirement. If three students are brilliant and one is unmotivated, that one student is cause for termination.

“We’ll be graduating people who think they’ve received a college education, but in reality have only done high school level work,” Mike said, which would be sadly evident after they are forced to compete with peers from other schools.
