In a post-election house cleaning President Trump announced Wednesday that Jeff Sessions had resigned as attorney general and will be replaced by his chief of staff Matthew Whitaker. It has been noted that Whitaker has called the Mueller investigation a witch hunt and he will replace Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in in his oversight responsibilities for Special Counsel Robert Mueller's farcical investigation into Russian “collusion” in the 2016 election.
"We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States," Mr. Trump tweeted. "He will serve our Country well."
Mr. Trump also announced that a "permanent replacement" for Sessions "will be nominated at a later date." Sessions resigned at Mr. Trump's request.
Whitaker served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa from 2004 until 2009. Whitaker then sought the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2014, but finished well behind Joni Ernst, who went on to win the seat in the general election and is a sitting senator.
Before venturing into politics, Whitaker attended the business and law school at the University of Iowa. He also served as a member of the 1991 Rose Bowl team of the Iowa Hawkeyes football team.
AG Sessions hired Whitaker as his chief of staff in September 2017, which was one month before he wrote an opinion piece for CNN in which he was very critical of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
In the article Whitaker said, "It is time for Rosenstein, who is the acting attorney general for the purposes of this investigation, to order Mueller to limit the scope of his investigation to the four corners of the order appointing him special counsel."
You may recall that last month, when Mr. Trump was asked about Sessions' future. He dodged the question but had plenty of praise for Chief of Staff Whitaker.
"Well, I'd never talk about that, but I can tell you Matt Whitaker is a great guy," he said.
By now I am sure that both Rosenstein and Mueller can see the handwriting on the wall … mene, mene, tekel, parsin
